Facebook for Business - Free Facebook Training and Traffic Leads

Using your Facebook for business can be advantageous. Facebook is very popular and why not take advantage of the traffic you can generate, while getting your message out.

Some Facts:

Over 600 million users on Facebook.
50 percent of the users log on daily.
Half of the users are out of college, and working, which means they have a greater spending capacity.
18 to 24 years old age bracket is becoming the most avid Facebook users.
More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, photo albums, etc.) shared each month on Facebook.
People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.
250 million active users are using mobile devices to access Facebook.
Every month 250+ million engage with Facebook on external websites.

The business opportunity Facebook presents cannot be ignored. Facebook is a free way to improve your online presence. To increase your success online, your business must be part of this popular activity.

There was a time when companies were honestly considering if they should or shouldn't get involved with Facebook for business. Now, most business owners are confident that Facebook is where customers are making their presence.

With Facebook your audience comes to you, and it's rather effective. I would guess active users check their Facebook account a couple times a day. Imagine how seamlessly put your sales efforts can be when you have an updated account. Your message can be seen by a huge portion of your audience daily. Facebook, keeps you in sight instantly which is a challenge in advertising awareness and promotion today.

If you are a business, that does have an advertising budget, Facebook for business can be a tool to cut costs. As more people today are turning to on-line presence, you do not have to have trimedia presence (print, radio or television) or even high priced web site development. Places where you can cut costs and still get the message out is common business sense.

You can advertise on Facebook and it is very similar to the popular PPC that Google uses. You have to go where you can receive the most bang for your buck and Facebook's popularity is surely to bring in traffic to your business. Facebook, as an advertising tool, is very concise at pointing out a specific demographic.

The shift in the way we obtain and share information has brought about a new set of opportunities and concerns for internet utilizers. Those who question the value of Facebook risk the possibility of falling out of visibility altogether. To succeed you must stay up with the times and where people hang out. Facebook is where a huge segment conglomerate.

A Thought - Business Facebook Page

A business Facebook page is different than your personal Facebook page. You have fans instead of friends. The business Facebook page is a representation of your brand and you have more customization of privacy settings. You can access traffic demographics much easier.

The business page is built off of the personal account and has tools to reach the growing network of Facebook users. Ads on the Facebook sidebar are available and demographics of your page traffic can be utilized. Facebook Insights, creates a badge or fanbox for promotion. Discussion boards with fans, adding company information and events, are just some of the features.

I hope I have presented some information to gear you towards improving your Facebook account or for that matter, even starting one. A great way to get your message out to a target audience. One word of caution: Please do not overuse your personal Facebook account for hammering your friends, with your business. You will lose friends quickly. If used wisely it is an incredible tool.

Remember the statistics and get a segment of the over 250 million monthly that engage with Facebook on external websites.

How to Create a Facebook Business Page: A 6 Step Guide

How to Create a Facebook Business Page

Also as Facebook changes regularly - this guide was written in April/May 2011.

This guide will take you through how to create a Facebook Business Page (aka Facebook Like Page).

Since the demise of the Facebook 'Static FMBL' application, it has been confusing for users of Facebook to create an effective 'Like Page' for their business, organisation or interest. I wanted to write this eBook guide to show that it is still easy to create a great Like Page with other, similar applications to the original Static FMBL application. I was confused earlier this year when these changes on Facebook occurred and found it very difficult to find direction on this. I did my own research and have condensed what I found into this guide. I hope it is useful.

This guide will show you how to create a Facebook Like Page for your business or organisation, including how to set up an initial Landing (or Welcome) Page (or Tab) to give a new visitor a great experience. Subsequently we will be writing other informative articles in this area about Facebook Like Page design and engaging with your Fans.

Step 1: How to Create a Basic Facebook Business Page:

1. The first stage in how to create a Facebook business Page is to set up a basic Business Like Page and then customise:

2. From your personal profile, go to any other company's or person's own Like Page.

3. Click on 'Create a Page' (located in the bottom left of the page)

4. The best choice on the next page for an effective Like Page is 'Brand or Product'; this can be fine-tuned later if necessary.

5. Next, you can choose the type of business/organisation you are, under 'chose a category'.

6. Then you can type the name of your brand (and name of your new Like Page) into the 'Brand or Product' box.

7. Your basic Like Page will now be created - ready for customisation.

8. The first 'tab' within your new Like Page that you will see is the helpful 'Get Started' page. Click the 'Update Category' button.

9. The 'Get Started' tab guides you through some of the things that you will need to and we will revisit this in a later guide. Our first priority is to customise your Like Page with a page known as a 'Landing' or 'Welcome' page (or Tab).

10. After you have confirmed the Category of your page ('Update Category'); you have created your basic Like Page.

11. You now have a basic Like Page set up; all ready to customise and make it more effective.

Step 2: Switching Between Your Personal Profile and Your New Like Page:

1. Now you have a new (basic) Like Page, you can switch between it and your Personal Page.

2. This is a new feature in Facebook. You can use Facebook as yourself (your Personal Profile) or as your business/organisation/interest (your Like Page).

3. To switch between the two, click on the 'Account' tab at the top-left of the page, then 'Use Facebook as Page'.

4. You will then be presented with all of the Like Pages that you have created (or that you are an administrator for - we will come on to administration of pages in another eGuide) see above.

5. Click on the 'Switch' button for the Like Page that you want to switch to.

6. You are then back to the 'Get Started' tab within your Like Page.

Step 3: Customising Your New Facebook Like Page:

Now that we have created a Facebook Business Page, we want to make your Like Page more appealing and more effective for you to build your Facebook community around your business/organisation/interest.

1. The first thing to do (as also suggested by the 'Get Started' guide) is to upload an image or logo.

2. This is straightforward: Click on 'Upload an Image'.

3. Then click on 'Choose File'.

4. This will then take you to a file explorer, allowing you to choose a picture or logo file from your own (local) computer.

5. Double-click on the photo that you want to upload.

6. This picture/logo (also sometimes known as an Avatar) is then published to the left-hand side of your Like Page.

7. Note: All pictures that you upload are also shown at the top of your 'Wall' tab also.

8. Steps 2 onwards on the 'Get Started' page can be carried out later, and we will be writing a further guide for these steps. We need to set up a Welcome page before these steps.

Step 4 continued: Setting up a Welcome Page.

Note: Part of how to create a Facebook Business Page is creating a Welcome Page. A Welcome Page is also sometimes known as a 'Landing Page' is it is where a visitor 'lands' the first time they access your Like Page.

1. From the 'Get Started' tab(page), click on 'Edit Page'.

2. You will arrive at the Manage Permissions tab.

3. You will need to go to the 'Apps' (short for 'applications') tab.

4. Facebook may ask you to switch back to your Personal Profile identity at this point. This is fine - click the 'Continue as You' button.

5. You will then be taken to the 'All Apps' (applications) part of Facebook.

6. Search for 'Static HTML'.

7. Then click on the 'Static HTML: iframe tabs' (with the star logo).

8. You will then be directed to the page for this App.

9. Click on the 'Go to App' button.

10. Facebook will then ask which of your Like Pages you would like to add this application to.

11. Choose the Like Page that you have just created.

12. Facebook will then ask you for confirmation that you want 'Static HTML: iframe tabs' to be added to your new Like Page; click on the 'Add Static HTML: iframe tabs' button.

13. Once confirmed, you will see that there is now a 'Welcome' tab included on the left hand side menu. This will become the page that all of our visitors see initially when they first arrive at your Like Page.

14. We can now go to our new Welcome tab and create some content for our Welcome page. Click on the Welcome tab to get Welcome Page screen.

15. We will come back to this page - so leave this internet explorer window open for now.

Step 5: Creating Content for Your Welcome/Landing Page

To create this content I use a company called Squarespace. Squarespace is a hosted web building tool that makes it very easy to create your own high quality web site(s). We are going to use it to create some HTML code to input into our Welcome Tab for our Facebook Like Page.

Note: You do not have to use Squarespace; there are many tools for doing this. What we are trying to achieve here is to create some content using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. This enables you to create content very easily - just typing in your copy (text) and inserting pictures, video, forms, et cetera, just the way that you would using Microsoft Word. Using these tools (or applications) you can then choose to view the HTML version of what you have created. You can then copy and paste this HTML code into your Welcome Page on Facebook and the Welcome Page will be created.

1. Once your Welcome Page content has been created in your WYSIWYG editor and you have viewed and copied the HTML version of that content, we are ready to past that HTML content into the Facebook Like Page Welcome tab.

2. We can then go back to the Facebook Welcome page that you should still have open (if not - don't worry, just go back to Facebook and open the Welcome page again).

3. Then right-click with your mouse and paste the HTML code into the top box from the two in the Facebook Welcome page editor.

4. You can then see the HTML code in the Welcome Page box.

5. Then click the 'Save and view tab' button to save what we have.

6. Then click on view your tab as a fan (or as a non-fan; it does not matter at this point).

7. You will then be able to see your new Welcome page as your visitors will.

8. We can still add more content in the form of pictures and video to make it more appealing, but the basic technical techniques have been covered here now.

Step 6 - Adjusting Settings For Your Welcome Page.

We now need to set our Like Page so that whenever a new visitor comes to our Like Page, they see the Welcome Page first.

1. From the 'Get Started' page click on the Edit Page button.

2. You will then see the 'Manage Permissions' page.

3. Currently the default Landing Tab will be set to 'Wall'.

4. Select the drop-down menu and change the option to 'Welcome'.

5. The Default Landing Tab is now set to 'Welcome'.

6. You can then click on 'View Page' to exit from the edit mode.

7. You can then navigate around your Like Page by using the tabs on the left of the page.

8. Each time you click on the Welcome page you will see the HTML version of the page. You just need to click on the 'Save and view tab' to see the page as your visitors will see it.

9. And view tab as a non-fan.

10. It is now possible to use a WYSIWYG/HTML editor (like Squarespace) to add further content to your Welcome page.

Watch out for subsequent guides, covering: Adding Video, Adding a Form Using an Autoresponder, Making your Welcome Page More Effective, Creating a Nice Username for your Facebook Page, Setting Up and Using Squarespace to create HTML and Effective Web Sites

5 Great Ways To Promote Your Business With Facebook

If done correctly, you can use Facebook to promote your products & services, build awareness, research consumer opinion and much more! Here's a few ways...

Facebook Pages

You can create a free page for your business or web site with Facebook Pages which gives your business a presence on Facebook. You can think of it as the equivalent of your Facebook personal profile, only for your business or web site.

You can add your business details and logo and you can also spice up your Facebook Page with a range of applications.

Facebook users who become fans of your Facebook Page can post on the wall, buy your products, learn about special events or promotions, join discussion boards and upload photos and video content to your Facebook Page.

You can also send message updates to all your Facebook Page fans at once, which you cannot do with your Personal Profile.

You want to keep the social aspect of Facebook in mind as you create your Facebook Page for your business, and try to present the social, human element of your business as much as possible on your Facebook Page.

To create your Facebook Page...

Log into your Facebook home page and search for Create A Facebook Page via the search bar at the top of each page.

You might also want to have a quick browse through existing Facebook Pages in your niche before you create your own page. You can find these pages here...

You'll have various applications and options you can use once you've created your Facebook Page.

Here are some options you may want to consider...

Facebook Notes

The Notes Feature allows you to post notes in a similar way to blogging. You can add Notes to your personal profile or to your Facebook Pages.

Facebook users can subscribe to your Facebook Notes via RSS in the same way they would on any normal Blog. You can even import one external Blog into Facebook Notes via an RSS feed.

Facebook Events

You can use the Facebook Events feature to create events pages for launches, openings or any other online or offline events you are hosting.

You can invite the fans of your Facebook Page to your events and they will be able to accept, decline or "maybe" your invitation. Your friends will also see a reminder of the event when they log in to their Facebook home page.

Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads allow you to use Facebook's platform for targeted advertising of your business. This is similar to AdWords content ads. You pay Facebook per click or per impression for ads which are displayed to your choice demographic among Facebook users.

You can target your ads to specific Facebook users according to age, gender, location and interests.

Should you consider Facebook Ads for your web business?

Paid web advertising can work for you when you provide high-profit goods or services.

You will therefore have the Return On Investment (ROI) to justify the expenses of advertising. You may want to consider keeping to free methods of exposure such as Facebook Pages and Groups should you not be in a high ROI situation.

You want to make sure to research the service well before you get started and then be sure to test your market at first with only small campaigns. You can always increase the size of your campaigns when you see which ads convert well.

You can get started with Facebook Ads by clicking the Advertising link at the bottom of your Facebook home page.

Facebook for Market Research

You will also find market research opportunities with Facebook...

Browse through Groups and Pages in your niche for a snapshot of the level of interest and activity.

How large is a group? How many members join each day? What are people's interests according to what they post on the group wall?

The answers to these questions can provide you with general data about the size of your niche and activity within your niche among Facebook users.

You can also create your own Facebook Group about a specific problem or issue in your niche and use it to ask questions to people who join. You can use the information you gather from the Group for content ideas for your web site or products you wish to develop.

The business model of the future of Facebook

The one thing Facebook has not figured out yet is how to utilize their fabulous product to make the most money, consistently and on an ongoing basis - i.e. finding the right business model. A really intriguing topic to write my very first blog about, because, in my opinion, finding the right business model for Facebook cannot be accomplished using conventional thinking, like, solely looking at Google and their search engine ad revenue, for example. Facebook is unique, so you need to find unique solutions. Actually, there is not one single best business model for this site, rather a multitude of potential revenue streams from very different sources. It is not only "how do we generate revenue", but equally important "when do we start with which one". This might sound strange now, but it will get clear, when reading this. Summarized, it is basically taking your assets and what made you successful in the first place and finding new ways to use them effectively.

Business Network / Business Profile

I thinking about this since beginning of February. Wouldn't it be great, if you'd only need to login once and have your private and professional network in one view, although strictly separated from each other, depending on your settings? Wouldn't it also be great for companies to have a business network with about 7 times more users than LinkedIn, that can offer people having every kind of skills and experience imaginable as well as offering any kind of services and products among their 500 million users? Wouldn't it be great for Facebook to be able to get into companies blocking the site so far, generating new streams of ad and other revenue from recruitment companies and others? But most importantly, Business Network market leaders LinkedIn and Xing charge their users, meaning Facebook would have an absolute legitimate case to do so as well for their business network users. This means, that the crucial, and psychological, hurdle of charging end-users can be overcome via a sideway, so to speak, without having to expect a massive backlash or a mass exodus of users. Of course, they can only start to charge the active business network users, but when the door is open once...needless to say, this has the highest potential impact on the bottom line of Facebook.

All this would happen, if Facebook offered a Business Network, too. This is not even a huge undertaking for them really, just leveraging their existing functionality.

It can be set-up rather easily via automatic transfer of the existing (fitting) data of the user profiles into their new professional profiles, giving the users the choice to opt-in into this service and let them enter more business-related data to be able to activate their professional profile (which also means more key data available within Facebook). The professional profile can be, e.g. on a separate tab right next to the private one or just as another wall and info page next to the main profile, allowing for it to be within the Facebook site, but with the possibility to completely block the private section, when accessed from certain locations, while also allowing the user to keep both profiles and their connections separated via respective privacy settings. To grow rapidly, at least initially the service should be offered for free. Ads can be displayed to help offset part of the launching and initial running costs. Existing Facebook functionality should be incorporated, examples are, the news feed with real-time updates, posting pictures (e.g. from corporate events), the Like button, the option to easily post relevant news, etc., enabling the user to do the same things they like to do on the social network also in a business environment and in a simple and already known way. This would make the Facebook Business Network that much more alive than the mostly static existing ones, allowing users to be active or passive, enjoying ever-changing new content, keeping them on the site, just like it's happening on the current social network. At the same time, the previously mentioned benefits for Facebook are enormous, while the development time and costs for this are comparatively small as already proven and existing layout and functionality can be used. In my opinion, if set up properly, the other existing professional networks will be marginalized within about 9-12 months after the launch (depending on the roll-out plan), just like the other existing social networks.

In short, just take what successfully works, put it in a business context and reap the huge rewards.

Job Market

A job market, integrated with the business net as well as the rest of the site could be the next step. Same procedure as above, at the push of a button, the relevant data from the other profiles, private and professional gets transferred to a job search profile(again, if agreed to by the user) and additional data is added by the users to fill out the respective profile, alternatively, if a business network already exists the professional profile can also act as the job search profile, saving the users valuable time and enabling them to easily get out on the job market, without needing to fill out a long new form, updating their CVs, etc.. The first option, a new profile, would enable Facebook to gather more data and place more ads; the second one keeps the number of profiles from expanding, meaning less complexity and maintenance. Why Monster.com - Facebook has the equivalent of the third largest country in the world as talent base, available at the push of a button. This enables Facebook to pretty quickly become a major player selling job ads and e.g. earning additional money from HR companies for special search functions, etc. and also generating more ad money with the existing ads on the side of the screen.

Marketplace

Facebook has a marketplace actually, but it's safe to say, that it never took off in the way other parts of the site did. So I suggest a relaunch. Advantages are that no additional login is needed and the pretty convenient account access, also via Facebook's pretty well done mobile apps. Now the business network profile of (at least) the sellers should be integrated with the marketplace with the users accepting that Facebook can use their data for security reasons (e.g. to eliminate users with fake profiles from the start) while having them also add more data to be able to act as a seller (more key data within Facebook). This wealth of data enables Facebook to have a sufficiently lower fraud rate and even better fitting custom offerings for every single user than e.g. Ebay, huge competitive advantages. Special promotions for goods on Facebook will also make it easier for many users to accept letting Facebook use their existing data strictly for security reasons.

Now some examples for things currently totally out of Facebook's scope,

Facebook Apparel

Why they haven't done this already is beyond me. It's a great brand, simple logo, people like it. White and blue T-shirts, each with the alternatively colored Facebook logo, and matching caps, maybe some sweaters, that's enough for starters. Then advertise these products via their ad system, which simultaneously generates a great case study to show to ad buying prospects. For sure not their potentially largest income stream, but pretty quick to launch and profitable nevertheless, with options galore, like the ability to build the biggest clothing online store on the web via own offerings and the integration of other brands and retailers in an open way, similar to what Facebook has already done with applications on their site (use what works). Tailor-made offers (no pun intended) for 500 million users every time they log in, is quite a powerful thing here, too. Even opening Facebook brick & mortar stores in the future could be a viable option, also not necessarily limited to clothing.

Comprehensive Event & Event pictures database

Neat little features with great user benefits while pretty quick and rather inexpensive to launch are always fun. A comprehensive event database where every event manager will enter their own events and every Facebook user can search the listed events, concerts, etc. in his or any other region. If you travel abroad, for example, you know where to look for events and e.g. can also contact the event management or other Facebook users attending an event you are interested in easily and immediately with tools you are already familiar with. Additionally, the option to link pictures to the respective events should be implemented. Again, integrating all the successful Facebook features e.g. allowing people to tag themselves or be tagged (for privacy reasons, only the person her-/himself can tag themselves if they want; to tag others, the user needs to give permission to be tagged in this more public environment), Comment, Like button, etc., also allowing users to upload their own pictures from the events and link them to the event (when authorized by the event manager), makes it that much more interesting and definitely increases the number of user interactions on Facebook. Needless to say, all this is non- existent with the usual event/photo sites, where you often need to register, again, then get flooded with ads and only have partial overview over one region, and basically none of the other options described above. A centralized database is so much more convenient. By using already existing functionality for a new application, Facebook will save resources in developing these features while gaining speed to launch them (a familiar theme by now). Existing sites will have no chance against a comprehensive, worldwide, but localized database within the offering of a 500 million user juggernaut. This is certainly not difficult to set up from a technical standpoint and will render the existing party sites meaningless within about 6 months after launch in the respective regions. Facebook would gain even more new users, more user-generated content and user interaction as well as more ad revenue (e.g. the ad money flowing to the party sites will go to Facebook) out of this.

Banking functions

Microcredits

Facebook itself could offer a variation of a microcredit to its users (a microcredit is a very small loan originally designed for impoverished people in developing countries to engage in self-employment projects that allow them to generate an income - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microcredit ). Where's the context, you will ask. The data of the users of Facebook is a credit rating specialist's dream as certain non-financial data is, when available, also highly valuable in today's loan approval process. No bank has anything close to this in terms of private data. To actually being able to use this data, Facebook would ask the applicants to sign a document that his Facebook user data can be used in the loan approval process. You can bet, somebody who wants money, will accept this. (Also, the applicants will be asked to provide their full financial information, of course, as this is currently not available on Facebook.) In this scenario, a credit officer will really have the total picture. This is an invaluable advantage in being able to calculate if an applicant should be denied or if someone will be able to pay back. This would result in a lower credit default rate for the Facebook loans, meaning in turn higher profitability, but also lower interest rates for the recipients of the loans, as Facebook would need to price less into the issued loans for the expected defaults than normal banks. Facebook needs some experienced banking people for this, get a license (not as difficult as it sounds nowadays, I guess the government will be happy, if anybody else wants to offer quality loans), set up a process and the respective software or alternatively, have one bank or a consortium of banks in the background for this and only act as router (first option earns much more money, latter one can be set up more easily and bears less risks). In any case, the first step would then be to start a very small test balloon (they would be totally overrun, if they would even offer this "only" in their home state, let alone Facebook-wide). After some time gaining experience with the process, they can think about offering higher amounts and potentially becoming quite some competition to regular banks (again, think the potential customer base of 500 million+), while, importantly, also doing something good in supporting their users with more affordable loans. Later on, they could even expand to offer more banking functions, like an online account, e-brokerage...

Peer-to-Peer Lending platform

They could also offer a Peer-to-Peer lending platform, where users lend money to other users, like e.g. Zopa or Prosper, which would soon thereafter become the biggest one on the web, of course. The process would be the same as with microcredits, whoever wants a loan, needs to share his data with Facebook, so it can be checked, if the applicants qualify, which is what the P-to-P platforms do as a service for the lenders, charging a small fee for it (another revenue stream for Facebook). The advantages to other platforms are the same as to banks in regards to microcredits, the quantity and quality of the data at hand. Another advantage here would be that the number of social interactions between the users increases as lenders and takers interact quite a lot on these platforms and a rather safe guess is that they would do even more so on the familiar Facebook. This is also potentially a good way of gaining experience before offering microcredits themselves, if they choose to do so.

Credit information system

If Facebook decides to not go the route above or chooses to launch another business, they could easily become the largest and best credit information data provider. They have data nobody else has and banks would pay a lot to get this information. Here, the privacy problem becomes a bigger one as Facebook cannot just transfer the data. From Facebook's point of view, the best thing would be to let the banks negotiate the access with each bank client, who is a Facebook user.

I have more examples, but this was just to show, that the possibilities are endless.

As I have stated initially, it is basically taking your assets and what made you successful in the first place and finding new ways to use them effectively.

As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, there are many ways for Facebook to haul in boatloads of money and Mark Zuckerberg be all smiles. It is not only "how do we generate revenue", but equally important "when do we start with which one". That's tricky, and a distinct timeline can only be set by the company itself, of course. My suggestion would be to start the Event/Pictures point in parallel with the business network. The latter has the most impact, the first can be set up the easiest and they don't interfere with each other. I have no affiliation with Facebook or any insight or access, so these are just my humble suggestions and assumptions. Whatever is going to happen, it is definitely exciting to see, where Facebook is actually going and what is possible for them.

Facebook Business Pages Demystified for Business Owners

Facebook is so popular that business owners can simply no longer consider it a site only appropriate for socializing and game playing. In fact, in September 2010, Facebook surpassed Google in regards to the amount of time users spent on their site. Facebook states that users spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook!

With 500 million active users, Facebook is the new behemoth on the Web. With its popularity across diverse age groups, integrated email application, and new Bing search integration, a Facebook user may simply no longer need to visit Google for Web searches or log off to use an email application. They may be able to experience the Web fully all from inside Facebook. With more than 50% of the active users logging into Facebook every day, according to Facebook, Facebook is now so important to your potential customers' lives that it make sense for you as a business owner to have a presence where your prospects are hanging out on a daily basis.

Let's clear up a few things that have confused business owners about Facebook. First, a Business Page is not to be confused with a personal profile. They are two separate entities and offer different options and ways to interact with friends and colleagues.

Are Facebook Busines Pages also called Fan Pages?

Many of you that have been using Facebook for a while will remember that Facebook used to call Business Pages - Fan Pages. Additionally, it used to be that someone "fanned you". Now they "like you". Don't get confused in thinking that a Fan Page is a different product than a Business Page they are one in the same.

All Facebook Pages start with the set up of a personal Facebook profile. That's right, a personal profile! You can't just jump to Page set up. The email address and name you use for your personal profile must be one tied to a person and not a catchall email like info. Remember, that if you have an employee set up the personal profile portion for your Page, that you don't want them to tie the new account to an email that you will not have access to if they leave the company. If they do so and leave your employ, you could lose access to your Facebook Page, all of your accumulated fans, and information without recourse.

For set up I typically recommend that one of company owners create a new email address specifically for Facebook set up. Once you have set up the personal Facebook profile, you are ready to get started. But, don't take time to add information like education other details in this special account unless you plan on using it for your own personal use. You are just setting up this account to have a platform to launch and access your new Facebook Page. While logged in to your new personal account, visit the Facebook Business Page Link. It will take you to the Facebook Business Page creation tool to actually create your new page.

On the right side of the creation page select under the heading the "Official Page" and mark "Create a Page for a:" and then finally select "local business". Enter your page name and then tick the box next to the statement that says you are a legal company representative and allowed to own the page. It is important to understand that the name you choose for the title of your Facebook Page will appear at the top of your finished page.

I recommend using proper spelling and no use of hyphens or underscores in your selected name. It used to be we had to enter hyphens or the spaces would show as non-HTML characters in the page name and URL, but Facebook has grown beyond that need now. For example, enter in "My Comapny Name" (note the proper use of spacing and capitalization), not "My-Company-Name". This name will appear in your new Page URL as well. Once you click create, the next page you see will be your brand new Facebook Page. It is that simple. Later after you've had 25 people "Like" your page you will be able to select a vanity URL, but we'll talk about that later.

Do my personal updates show on my Business Page?

After you have set up your Facebook Page, you can "lock down" your personal profile that was used to launch your Page. To do so, just you alter the privacy settings in the personal account to not show your personal information to others who are not "approved" friends.

When Facebook was first created many business owners including myself, started with a Facebook personal profile for their business. Now that Facebook has created Pages, you can easily change the privacy settings on your old personal profile to funnel your business traffic to your new Facebook Page keeping your old personal profile now just for family and close friends.

When you change the privacy settings on the personal profile attached to your Business Page, it does not impact who can view information about your Business Page. Just as equally, if you post pictures of your kids on your Facebook personal profile that is the launch pad for your Business Page, and you have your personal profile limited to "friends only", your kids' photos will not appear on the wall of your Business Page.

Why exactly would a business owner want a Business Page and not just use a personal profile?

Several reasons to have a Facebook Business Page are: the ability to contact all people who "Like" or who "Fan" you with newsletter type notes with one click, interact with discussion questions like a forum, set up events and invite fans to attend, and even create specialized welcome and shopping pages. Your Business Page can almost be a mini website!

Creating your Business Page vanity URL

Once you have 25 people that have clicked that they "Like" your Business Page, you can select a short easy to remember name to use to promote it on your website and business card. You can have vanity URLs for both your personal account and Business Page.

It is very important to understand that once you have selected your vanity URL you will not be able to change the name, so select carefully. Best practice tips for keeping your new Facebook Business Page updated.

No one wants to be spammed, but sometimes new Business Page owners get excited and post what seems like a constant flow of information on their wall. It is important to understand that what you post on your wall is posted on the wall of the people who have clicked "Like" on your page. We encourage our clients, when they are doing status updates themselves, to be courteous and post about twice a day. Facebook is not Twitter and so 5 to 10 status updates a day could get you blocked or hidden by fans when they feel you have inundated their wall with your daily or hourly updates.

Conclusion

I hope that this white paper has helped to introduce you to Facebook Business Pages in a way that helps you to feel that you can easily set on up and have fun doing it. If you haven't set up your own Facebook Business Page, now's the time to consider setting one up. Facebook is only getting more popular and is actively seeking to woo the business community into their portal with demographic based pay per click advertising and the new integrating search with Bing.com.

If you feel that you need professional help in setting up your page or maintaining your updates and to interact with Fans, we ask you to consider our Facebook service offerings. I know that you will find us responsive and affordably priced.

How to Create the Right Facebook Groups to Promote Your Business

Facebook groups allow you to create great brand awareness for your business.

You have an option to join an existing group on Facebook as well as creating a new group. A group can be used as an efficient medium to promote your business on Facebook. Unlike Facebook pages, Facebook group cannot convince users to become fans but rather users have to contact you to join your group. Therefore, you have to prepare and implement a proper strategy to drive more web traffic to your business website through people who have already become members of your group.

Creating Your Group

While creating new Facebook groups, you have to spend some time in deciding its name and purpose. It is important to remember that Facebook does not allow you to change name of existing groups. Similarly, you also do not have any option to change the initial networking options. For instance, if you have chosen the networking option as global, you cannot subsequently restrict the appearance of your group. Similarly, the group can be open to be viewed by every Facebook user, but members have to be approved by you to join the group. It is always advisable to understand and implement the initial setting in a proper manner.

Make the Group More Interactive

You can convince more people to visit your website by interacting with them through Facebook groups. The group discussion boards are a great medium to communicate with members and encourage group conversation. Simply select a catchy title for a new thread and post some fresh details to collect comments, feedbacks and suggestion of other members. It is also advisable to reply to queries and questions posted on the discussion board to build a healthy relationship with members. The communication and interactions will further encourage members to visit your business website regularly.

Promote Your Group

For attracting more traffic to your website, you have to attract an increased number of Facebook users to join your group. Therefore, you have to consider using creation techniques to promote your Facebook groups. If you have selected the right group type, the group can be viewed by a Facebook user while browsing for groups of specific category and interest. Further, you have to upload relevant photos and videos to attract more people to join your group. You can even consider uploading promotional images of products you offer. When members are impressed with your promotional images, they will be interested to visit your business website to gather additional information.

Invite People to Join Your Group

As you have created your Facebook group to promote your business activities, you have to invite more Facebook users to join. More group members has an impact on diverting more web traffic to your business website. Along with sharing relevant information about your products or services, you can announce promotional offers and discounts at periodic intervals to boost sales.

Discover The Main Benefits of Facebook Marketing on Your Business

Facebook has achieved overwhelming success in the online market. The site's ability to connect old acquaintances and strengthen existing friendships has led to its worldwide adoption among socially savvy computer users. This unique social networking platform has also become wildly popular among companies that want to market their products to a broad swath of the population.

Because Facebook makes most of its money on advertisements and micro-transactions, the site is constantly trying to attract new users from around the world. Although Facebook accounts are free, the site sees each new user as a potential customer who may generate revenue by clicking on advertisements or buying virtual goods in social games. Facebook wants other companies to benefit from this captive audience; since most of the site's money comes from ad revenue, it needs advertisers in order to survive.

Facebook marketing has become a massively successful way of selling products to an eager base of consumers. The site's "Page" system makes it easy for fans of a company to "like" a page with a single click of the mouse. Business owners can reach a wide audience even if the product they are selling is usually considered something that will only appeal to a niche market. Because users can see the pages that their friends have "liked," they are likely to sign up to receive updates from these businesses as well. This provides free internet marketing for small businesses that cannot afford massive ad budgets.

Some companies and celebrities may also choose to create their own profiles. These profiles are more versatile than pages because they allow users to have a base of "friends" that they can interact with in various ways. Because Facebook does cap the number of friends that one profile can be connected to, the "Page" feature may be a better option for large businesses.

Facebook has made internet marketing easier than ever. Companies can use the site to advertise their events for free. The "Events" feature allows users to invite all of their friends to a party, charity fundraiser, corporate event or concert in a few simple steps. All of the invited users can then pass the invitation along to their friends. Facebook does not charge for the "Events" feature. This convenient event planning program can be a serious money saver for businesses that are interested in Facebook marketing.

Larger businesses with an advertising budget to spare may want to consider buying ads on Facebook. Since users' Facebook profiles contain a great deal of information about their personal preferences, it is easy to target ads at a specific group of users. Advertisers can type in the keywords and demographics they want to target and gain immediate access to the users who would be most interested in their products. Companies can choose whether they want to pay per click or per view for their advertisements. This system makes internet marketing easier than ever for business owners who do not have extensive experience with purchasing ads online.

Direct Sellers: LinkedIn for Business

ByMaria Duron

The recent years have brought about the huge growth and popularity of social and business networking sites. Though people were skeptical in the beginning that these sites would really work, nowadays, most people and businesses have realized that these networking channels have opened up opportunities that had not been available in the past.

LinkedIn is the largest business networking site online, with over 120 million users and still growing. As a direct seller, you may have set up a profile with LinkedIn, and you may occasionally visit the site to keep updated with what's happening, but are you really using this site to the best of your advantage? Have you realized the various ways you can use LinkedIn for building your business?

Though you may think that LinkedIn is great for increasing your sales, the real power of this business networking site is that it's a powerful tool for building and maintaining relationships. Successful companies and entrepreneurs know the importance of networking in the world of business. And as the saying goes, sometimes it's not what you know but who you know.

Here's a step-by-step guide in using LinkedIn for Business:

1. Craft a Compelling Profile

Before you should go ahead with networking and using other LinkedIn features for building your business, it's important to start with creating and crafting a compelling profile. A good profile will help you attract people's attention, increase your visibility, and help you achieve better rankings in the search engines. As a direct seller, there's a lot of value in achieving these three things.

Some quick tips for creating a compelling profile:

• Put up a professional-looking photo

• Make sure your professional headline really sums up what you do

• Take advantage of linking to your websites

• Include your work history and education

• Write a great summary of what you do

• Add a bit of personal information

• Complete your profile as much as you can

2. Form connections and build up your personal brand

Since LinkedIn is a social networking site specifically for professionals and business owners, the real power of it comes from the connections you form within it. After you've created an attractive profile, it's now time to add people you know and connect with these people. This is the best way to build up your personal brand and increase your credibility.

To be truly successful in business, one of the most important things is to build trust. The more you form healthy connections and build relationships with people, the more people trust you.

Here are some tips for using LinkedIn to form connections and build your personal brand:

• Post status updates

• Comment, like and share other people's status updates

• Contribute to Answers

• Contribute to Groups and participate in discussions

• Show off your expertise

3. Find people who can help you achieve your goals

As a direct seller, what exactly are your business goals? Do you want to increase sales, get new customers, acquire new partners, or generate new leads? It's a good idea to be very specific with your goals.

After you've defined your business goals, you can now use LinkedIn to find people who can help you achieve these goals. The power of LinkedIn lies in the network you have.

When you think about it, the real value of LinkedIn actually comes from your 2nd and 3rd degree connections, not your 1stdegree ones. Your 1st degree connections are people you already know and interact with, but if you really want to take your business further, you need to network with people whom you don't know but may be able to help you achieve your goals. And because LinkedIn easily shows the connections you have, you can ask the person you know to introduce you to the person they know who can help you. This is the best way to get their attention - through a mutual friend or acquaintance.

4. Harness the power of LinkedIn Groups

Perhaps the greatest value of using LinkedIn for your business is its Groups feature. Because here is where discussions happen, where people exchange ideas and information, and where relationships and connections really form.

Through LinkedIn Groups, you can ask questions and get valuable answers from the members. You can also answer questions to help you gain visibility and build credibility. Don't try to do a sales pitch - this is not the platform for that. By providing really useful information, you increase people's trust in you, which is more valuable.

Also, when you're a member of a group, you can actually contact other members directly, even those not within your first, second, or third degree network. This can prove invaluable in business, since it's all about forming connections and building relationships.

Truly, there's a lot of value that LinkedIn can provide for your business. Once you really understand how to use this excellent platform, you can really take your direct selling business to new heights it has yet to reach. So if you haven't gotten started, the right time to do so is now.

Facebook business pages for entrepreneurs Demystified

Facebook is so popular that entrepreneurs simply no longer a site just for socializing and games play it suitable to consider. In fact, in September 2010, surpassed Facebook Google in relation to the amount of time users on their website spent. Facebook means that users spend more than 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook!

With 500 million active users, Facebook is the new behemoth on the Web. With their popularity in different age groups, integrated e-Mail program and new Bing search integration to a Facebook user simply visit Google for Web searches or unsubscribe, use an e-Mail program. You can all experience in Facebook may be on the Web completely. With more than 50% of active users logging into Facebook daily, according to Facebook Facebook life, is now so important for your potential customers that it makes sense for you as an entrepreneur, a presence to have where are your prospects on a daily basis.

Let's clear a few things that have confused entrepreneurs on Facebook. First, a business site is not to be confused with a personal profile. They are two separate units and offer various options and opportunities to interact with friends and colleagues.

Hot business pages and fan pages?

Many of you have used Facebook for a while to remember that Facebook uses to invoke business pages - fan pages. Also used, it be that someone they "fanned". Now they "You". Not confused into thinking that a fan page is a different product than a business page they are in the same.

You begin by establishing a personal Facebook profile all Facebook business pages. That's right, your personal profile! You can set page not only to business you jump. The e-Mail address and name, you need to use for your personal profile to a person and not a catch - all email like Info@mydomain.de be bound. Keep in mind that if you a staff member of's personal profile part have set up for your business site, you do not want it gives the new account e-Mail, that you not access to when they leave the company to bind. If they do this and your deal with allow, you could lose access to your Facebook business page, all of your accumulated fans and information without recourse.

Setting you I recommend generally entrepreneurs creating a established a new email address specifically for Facebook. After you have set up the personal Facebook profile, you're ready to start. But take no time to get information how other details in this special account add education, if you want to use for your own personal use. You are only this account set up to launch a platform and access to have you on your new Facebook business page.

Even create your own Facebook business applications and marketing tools-

The idea behind using Facebook as a venue for doing business is building a user base in the form of a community who respond to you as a person or to your product. If you just turn your page into one big advertisement, you are not going to get much in the way of a response. You need to educate people about the product without coming across as a hard sell.

You want to create the impression that you are here for socializing, not business. People will come to trust you and be more likely to buy your product or service if you can do this.

Facebook has built in tools which can be used to build your business. These include:

- Social Ads

- Pages

- Beacon

- Insights

- Platform

- Polls

These tools can help you to build awareness of your brand through Facebook and bring in potential clients. Needless to say, you are going to have to learn to use them effectively. Read on to find out how to harness these tools to build your business using Facebook.

You can learn how to take further advantage of these features by visiting the facebook website business section.

SOCIAL ADS

Social ads have a lot of promise for building your business since they can go directly to the news feeds of your Facebook friends. Anyone who is on your friends list will be able to get the word about your business right on their profile page.

This is also a very easy way of target marketing. You can control exactly who sees your ads - and target marketing is the way to get sales.

FACEBOOK PAGES

You can make a Face book page for a business, just as you would for yourself. This allows people to interact with and even become friends with your business. It is a great way to make a lot of people aware of your product and your brand who would not otherwise.

You know when someone becomes friends with your business on Facebook that you have a potential client; at the very least, they have shown some interest. People can interact with your business as they would with any of their other Facebook friends - they can leave comments and generally enhance the experience of a visit to your page.

You can use Facebook to your best advantage by adding features that will appeal to your target market and fit in with the brand image you are aiming to create. Quizzes, games, a Facebook group and so on.

FACEBOOK BEACON

Like social ads, Facebook Beacon gives you the ability to build your business by promoting yourself via your Facebook friends news feeds. You can set Beacon to notify all of your Facebook friends whenever you have a new product available, or any other sort of news or information you would like to disseminate amongst your Facebook friends. All you need to do is to add a little code to your Facebook page (this can be done by copy and paste, so no need to panic).

This encourages more interaction with your page, the website of your business and your company in general. This also helps get the word out about your businesses product or service.

Do not fret that you will be mercilessly spamming your Facebook friends and invading their privacy - they can opt out of these updates at any time they choose. You of course have the same ability for Facebook Beacon updates from others.

FACEBOOK INSIGHTS

If you are using facebook as a method of promoting your business you will of course want to know just who is checking out your Facebook page, clicking on your ads and joining your friends list. Facebook Insights is a tool which can give you a lot more detail on these sorts of statistics, which can help you to evaluate the efficacy of your campaign.

Armed with this information you can make the call as to whether viral marketing is working in your favor. Word of mouth is one of the best means of advertising and Facebook can facilitate it on a large scale. Facebook Insights lets you figure out what parts of your campaign are working and which are not as well as giving you valuable demographic information which will help you refine your campaign further.

FACEBOOK PLATFORM

Facebook Platform is an exciting tool for business indeed. Programmers can use this tool to build programs which will work with Facebook and add to the usefulness and fun of your Facebook page. If people like what you have on your page, they will spread the word and this build your client base.

You can add all manner of different applications to your site using this platform. Many opt for games, quizzes and other interactive features. You can have a look at the Applications page on the Facebook site to get an idea what sort of things others are using the platform for. These kinds of features can really help you build your brand image; take advantage of them.

FACEBOOK POLLS

Facebook polls can be a great way to gather demographic information from people using the site. Since you can make the poll interactive and fun to use, you'll have no trouble gathering data. Best of all, you can target your polling.

You can make sure your polls are targeted just where you want them to be since you already have access to some data such as marital status and age of your Facebook friends. This helps you keep your polling relevant.

Do not forget about these valuable tools - they can really help out your business.

Anyone who is willing to put in just a little bit of effort can make their own applications for Facebook. You just need to learn Facebook Markup Language - there are plenty of tutorials online which can help you learn the ropes of this quickly.

Remember to have a look through what is already out there in terms of Facebook applications before you develop your own. If everyone is already using a very similar application, not too many of your fellow facebook users will be enticed by it. Do something a little different if you want to grab the attentionof people.

CREATING APPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS

With just a little bit of programming know how, anybody can make and distribute their own applications. You'll be doing this to build your business and it can make a big difference. Applications can really draw in people and keep them on your site. Games are especially popular and can build your brand while keeping users engaged and entertained.

You would be unwise to neglect the use of these applications available to you through Facebook. They can help get the word out about your business - and that is why you made a Facebook page for your business in the first place, no?

You will also be building a sense of community amongst all of these potential customers which will help you get sales.

Here are a few tips for getting the best results from your applications:

1) Make it relevant

In marketing, relevancy is everything. If your potential customers can not get into it, or if it is unclear how the application ties into your product or service, rethink your application.

2) Privacy policy

Even if they are on facebook to socialize, people still want their privacy to be respected. This is why there are friend lists and groups, to which one must be invited. Privacy is a natural human desire and Facebook facilitates this while still allowing for socialization. Remember to respect the privacy of users and retain that trust you have worked so hard to build with them.

3) Free distribution

Once your application is finished and ready to go, you will distribute it. You can do this by listing it on the site along with all of the other Facebook applications and then invite others to install it. If your facebook friends like your application, they will spread the word.

As one Facebook for business

There are a growing number of social media sites being used by businesses in their company marketing efforts. The secret to using social media effectively is not to be everywhere, but instead to have an online presence where your current and prospective customers are online. Contrary to what many believe- Facebook is not just for college students or for personal use. Facebook is increasingly being used by companies in many creative ways such as to build their brand image, to drive traffic to their website and blogs, to announce or get feedback on new products, manage their online reputation, attract employees, communicate company information, and as a means to intercept potential prospects. For many companies, this increased company communication is leading to enhanced relationships with current and prospective customers. In this article, I will outline how a planned internet marketing approach can lead to positive results for your business. I will begin the article by addressing a few common misperceptions about Facebook that I hear most frequently from my clients. Next, I will detail how to use and set up the various sections of a Facebook account. I will conclude with several recommended applications that will add functionality to your company Facebook page.

Common misperception #1: Facebook is only for personal use

Each time I give presentations on using social networking sites for business there is the perception in the audience that Facebook is only useful for communicating with friends and family. Facebook started as a closed community for college students, and has not been as effective as Linkedin at highlighting the business page and advertising features. However, Facebook continues to grow in use by companies looking to reach the more than 200 million active users, and has very powerful and targeted demographic tools that help companies to hone in on their target market.

Common misperception #2: Facebook is only for college students

According to the Facebook Press Room page, there are more than 200 million active users on Facebook and a million new members are joining each week in the U.S. alone. Contrary to what many of my audiences believe- more than two-thirds of Facebook users are not in college. According to comscore.com, more than 50% of Facebook's users in the U.S. are over 35; the single biggest age demographic in the U.S. on Facebook is now between 35 and 44, and Facebook's fastest growing age group is 55 and older. They also reported that Facebook ranks as the top social networking site in the majority of European countries.

Common misperception #3: I am too busy for this, and besides-it is not worth my time

Some of the reasons why social networking sites like Facebook are increasingly being used by companies is because they provide businesses the opportunity to easily and efficiently communicate regularly with the people in their network. Networks can include people with whom they are currently doing business, people whom they would like to do business, vendors, and potential business partners.

Social networking sites like Facebook are serving as an adjunct to, and in some cases, replacement for, traditional means of communication such as newsletters and direct mail. Facebook can be used to regularly announce or get feedback on new products, spotlight new employees or existing employees accomplishments or talents, reward customer loyalty, promote special events and special offers, as well as to create partnerships. According to a Forrester Research interactive marketing online research survey (March 2009): "40% of companies surveyed expect to cut direct mail budgets, while 35% will decrease newspaper spend, and 28% will slash magazine money in order to spend more in interactive media." Some companies have reported that by using these online means of communication they have reduced their marketing budget while at the same time increasing sales.

Why Social Networking works:

What companies that use social networking sites are finding is that these sites allow them to more regularly communicate with people, vendors, clients, colleagues, and prospects, which, in turn, helps business understand their customers needs better, increase trust, and therefore build better business relationships. Most people know that Facebook has been helpful as a tool for connecting or re-connecting with friends, family and co-workers. And most understand that even the personal connections have the potential to become new business opportunities-so it makes sense that Facebook can be used to communicate with those in the business milieu.

How to Set Up a Facebook Profile:

To make use of Facebook you need to set up an account. After registering you need to do the following in order of importance:

1. Create a Profile

In order to begin to use Facebook you must create a profile detailing information about yourself. Based on site policies, you can create only 1 profile, and it must be tied to a human name, preferably your real name, not a business name. We will review setting up your business page later in this article, but first you must set up your personal profile. If you are a married female, use your maiden and married names so more people can find you. Facebook has a "Friend Finder" feature that allows users to search for people by school, company, or organization. In order for people to find you -you must so be sure to list all of your previous schools, organizations, employers, in your profile. Thoroughly complete the "About Me" section to describe your business and what services or products you offer. In the "Information" box on your profile page, you need to include links to your website address, newsletter, blog and other business information such as your company contact information, logo and a photo of yourself. Your profile page should be considered your "branding" page or your marketing campaign. If you are working for a company-you don't have to list all your personal interests-just limit your entry to listing your professional interests. You can syndicate your blog on your profile page. By doing this you are enabling any post that you make to automatically appear on your profile page and all of those people who are connected to you will see it.

2. Build Your Contact List

Facebook was created based on the concept of connecting with friends. You can send and receive "friend requests" and once accepted, your friend can view your profile and you can view theirs. To begin connecting with people that you know, you can either import your address book/ contact database, or you can also search Facebook for individual people.

You can also view the friends list of each person with whom you are connected. If you know any of your new friend's connections, or you would like to know them-you can send a connection request. You can grow your friend list by inviting all your clients, business associates, customers, family, friends, co-workers, school alumni, neighbors, and anyone else you think would be interested in connecting. I would suggest also using the search feature on Facebook to look up people with whom you have lost contact. After befriending -your profile will show up on all your friends' pages. Therefore, the more friends you have- the more pages your profile will appear-leading to more people who will see your page and possibly get in touch with you.

3. Communicate by using Wall Posts

Each Facebook member has a "wall" where friends can post messages. In the business networking world, this is the online equivalent of calling them on the phone. You can send a complement to a colleague on their work by writing this on their wall, comment on their new service or product offering, or communicate an upcoming training or networking opportunity.

4. Update Your Status

At the top of your Facebook page is a status box. When you post a status update, everyone in your friends list can see your update on their home page. For business owners, this is the place to share tips, promote events, post blog updates, announce new products, links to your affiliate programs, links to interesting video or audio presentations, websites, articles, and newsletters. You can add updates as often as you are able in the " What's on you mind?" box. These will appear on all of your friends' pages so ensure that they are meant for everyone on your friend list, and are professional in nature. Otherwise, you risk people removing you from their list.

5. Participate in Groups

Online groups allow you to network virtually with potential clients and peers. You can also join Groups on Facebook that are related to your work. There are groups for therapist, teachers, coaches, and every conceivable profession. You can network, and learn from experts in the field. Another way to maximize the potential and relevance of these groups is to start one of your own. There is no cost to do this and this is a great way to improve your company's visibility. For example, I started a group for mental health facility administrators in Boston. This group is now a resource for sharing best practices and may over time lead to mutual referral relationships. To access groups, start from your Facebook home page, view the list of applications and click on "Groups." You can browse through thousands of groups by area of interest, by industry and geography. There are an incredibly varied selection of topics and professions all over the map.

6. Build Your Friends List

For business purposes, it makes sense to have as many friends as possible. One way to do this is to join a group and send connection requests to fellow members with a note letting them know of your interest in connecting with them on Facebook. Just as you would with an in-person business introduction, be sure to check out their profile and learn about what they are currently doing. Networking always works best when there is a two-way exchange. Find ways you can be helpful to them such as introducing them to a colleague or potential business partner and they may likely reciprocate and return the favor. Also, create your own events page, or post on the Facebook "Events page." You can even see how many RSVP and get feedback from attendees.

7. Create Fan Pages

Because Facebook requires that a profile be designated to a person, not a business, they have instead provided the ability to create fan pages. You can create a fan page for a business, book, product, author, speaker, celebrity or just about anything else you want. To create a fan page, scroll all the way down to the bottom of Facebook and click on "Advertising" (don't worry, this is free to set-up). Next, click on "Pages" at the top of the screen. You will find some helpful explanations about how pages work, along with the link that will allow you to create your own fan page. Once your page is created you can add links, events, discussion boards and other features that make them interactive. Your updates from your fan pages will appear on your profile so your friends will know about them. You can invite people to become a "fan" of your page as an alternative to sending friend requests which will help you to further cultivate an online community

8. Use the Marketplace

Facebook has an online marketplace that allows you to list your services and products at no cost. This is a great way for you or your company to get exposure. You can also use the marketplace to find items or services that you need.

How To Set Up a Business Page on Facebook

Setting up a business page is easy. Just log in to your profile page and scroll down to the bottom of the screen. Then click on "Advertising" or by following this link: http://www.facebook.com/business That will bring up a page with the blue links one of which is called "Pages." Click on Pages, and then click on the green "Create a Page" box on the right of the screen. You can now start filling this information in to create and customize your business page.

After you create your business page, Facebook will automatically add an application called the "Page Manager" which should be located on the top and left side of your log. Again choose Facebook Pages, then choose the best category for your business. Click this link to load your business page where you can then edit and add to the existing content.

It is important that you choose the name of your Facebook page carefully because the page name will become your key word search terms, and is the only text that is used in a search on a Facebook page. Once your page is in place, you can add applications that help to enhance how you represent your company in your own unique way. To find applications for Facebook, click on "Applications" in the upper left corner of your page, or search for them at this link: http://www.facebook.com/apps Applications are fairly easy to install and to set up. If you have difficulty with any one application-please note that there is often more than one application available to accomplish the same task.

Facebook Applications for Business:

Simply RSS : This allows you to display up to eight RSS feeds on your Facebook page and display the feeds from your business's main site and newsrooms.

Upcoming: Add all of your events to upcoming.org, and you can easily display them on your Facebook page with Upcoming's Facebook application.

My Flickr: Display photos from your Flickr account using this application. These photos can include logos, product photos, photos from events, etc.

Posted Items Pro: Allows you to embed multiple YouTube, Yahoo, and Google Videos, music mp3s, sites, files, and more onto your profile and Facebook pages. You can add any variety of these elements, making it great for a media center or press section.

Twitter APP: If you have a Twitter account this application will automatically pull your tweets into your Facebook status, and it automatically installs a Twitter-themed icon letting all you friends on Facebook know that you are on Twitter. It also saves you time in updating and ensures that you have some profile activity to keep you relevant. If you are not on Twitter yet-you can add this at any time.

By implementing these applications you will be creating an interactive page that gives visitors a more complete understanding of your business.

Make the Time to Stay Relevant

In order to stay relevant on Facebook, you need to continually update your Page and use the site. If you do not have the time needed to do this consistently- then I would suggest you hire a copywriter or social media consultant to help. The more actions you take, the more you appear in a fan's News Feed. This keeps you in their mind, and in their friend's feeds when they interact with you. But updating content will do more than keep you on the News Feed; it will also help make your Facebook Page one that people will return to by offering fans an incentive to continue to read your content and return to your page. There are many ways to do this such as providing exclusive content, special promotional pricing, exclusive contests, product previews, or privileged access to company events.

I hope this information has been helpful to you in getting started in using Facebook. Make no mistake about it-social networking is not a passing fad. Facebook, and other social media sites are here to stay. So regardless of whether you make use of all the social networking sites- you cannot discount the recent research indicating that customers are increasingly going online to gather company and product information, compare prices, and place orders. As with any new technology social networking will take time and effort for businesses to fully benefit from it; however, it is my belief that this time and effort, if done consistently and in a planned, thoughtful manner, will be time well spent.

Should Your Business Be Using Google Plus?

Google Plus has been floating around the Internet since July this year, and was quickly taken up by those mainly in the tech space. The rest of the world, well, they are still on Facebook.

Back in late October of this year, Google opened up the flood gates for businesses to go and claim their page, much like you can do so on Facebook. The thing is, you ask your average business owner if they are on Google Plus, and most likely you are met with a hollow stare, or you may even get a "I'm not sure what I need to be doing on there".

That's pretty standard stuff in any new Social Media platform, and really most businesses have just gotten comfortable using Facebook and Twitter.

In normal circumstances I would suggest to these businesses that they just focus on where their main market hangs out - Facebook.

However, Google Plus has an ace up its sleeve, and dangles a carrot that pretty soon any business owner or any web property that relays on organic Google traffic will not be able to ignore. Google Plus results are now showing up in organic search results.

This means is that if you're publishing or sharing your content on your Google Plus business page, it is now eligible to start showing up in search results. The end result is more traffic to your web properties, and taking ownership of more real estate on the front page of Google.

How many of your competitors do you think are on to this?

Of course this is only weeks old at time of publication, although it is very clear this is a huge trump card in the battle of businesses Social Media activities.

Our advice is to go claim your Google Plus page, (first you will need a personal profile) it's very simple, literally five minutes work.

Updating and sharing your content is again a simple task that takes just a couple of minutes per day.

There are some drawbacks, the main one being that only the person who claims the page can be an admin of the page. This needs attention by Google quickly.

Another drawback I find is you can only follow people who are already following you. However in all fairness, this will stop business pages from spamming and annoying the hell out of people.

Google are giving the Plus project the highest priority right now, so we know that there is more surprises to come.
